Caffè & Co. Journey

The inspiration behind Caffè & Co. comes from influences taken from many European cafes and bars over the past 20 years or so. One of the earliest memories of cafe society comes from a tiny cafe bar in an off the beaten track side street close to St Marks Square, Venice. No tourists, just locals, in a room not much more than 10 square metres.

The place was packed, probably 5 or 6 deep at the tiny bar with espressos and ristrettos being knocked out like bullets and being necked in one by the local coffee addicts (which is bascialy the entire population), almost as quick. Everyone was in there, a few local pensioners in their ‘reserved’ seats, newspapers in hand, businessmen and women taking the opportunity for a mid morning caffeine boost and gondoliers and water taxi drivers waiting for a fare.

The place was buzzing, the atmosphere was electric and you wondered what they were all talking about:(the economy, the nuisance tourists, family troubles, the weather etc), everyone seemed to know each other. It was a fun place to be with a great community feel and clearly the place to find out the latest gossip and do business. But best of all, the coffee was great!

From that point on, I was hooked. I was drawn to staring at baristas doing their intricate job of creating a superb tasting espresso (this was probably the first time I dared to try the tiny black brew!). I couldn’t take my eyes off them. The gleaming espresso machines they used were clearly some serious bit of kit as they commanded such a presence and I found myself comparing them and mentally remembering the brand names and models....sort of sad, but true!

Café bars have always captivated me but unfortunately, what many of them deliver isn’t always good. The coffee shops of today or rather the coffee shops that have huge High St brand presence everywhere we turn have created the cafe society that we know in the UK. That is, the desire to socialise and drink coffee in a coffee shop.

How Caffè & Co. differs is that we are an artisan coffee shop, not just a shop that sells coffee. Coffee is our focal point and it is coffee where we strive to achieve perfection first and foremost.

It has been a long journey getting to where we are now and we have a long way to go to acheive perfection, in fact, perfection should always only be strived for.
