Fundamentals of Espresso & Barista Basics

This is a short intense course, aimed at those who want to know more about espresso, how to use a commercial espresso machine and grinder and thus gain the ability to make better espresso as well as espresso based milk/coffee drinks both in the coffee shop as a barista or at home using a domestic machine. We will highlight some of the differences between domestic and commercial equipment.

We will cover a little theory and science behind the magic, the importance of the beans themselves, we will look closely at the importance of the grinder before creating espresso and moving on to the art of milk steaming and texturing. We will cover a number of important factors that must be adhered to in creating great espresso and milk texture and will highlight some important things to look out for when you next visit a coffee shop. We will look at the most common mistakes that lead to a poor shot of espresso / poor milk texture and how to avoid them before creating a range of the most popular coffee drinks whilst also looking at latte art and other areas of the barista remit.

Essential cleaning and maintenance is also an important part in ensuring the ongoing and efficient operation of the equipment and a crucial part of the daily barista role.

Suitable for: Beginners simply wanting to know more about coffee, considering working as a barista, to assist in gaining employment as a barista as part of a gap year, improving their espresso making at home or just for fun! This course does not cover the entirety of the Introduction to Coffee course so is not a substitute. If you are serious about coffee then we strongly recommend that you take both courses.

To ensure you get lots of hands on experience and tasting, this course never has more than 3 participants. If you do have a group of 4 or more, please contact us first so that we can create a bespoke package for you.

Duration: 4 hours

Class Size: 1-4

Requirements: None, but you may also consider taking the Introduction to Espresso course first. It helps if you love coffee as you will have the opportunity to drink lots of it! If you don't like coffee there really is little point in coming along!

Cost: £90 per person (exc VAT). A personalised (non accredited) certificate of course completion will also be provided inclusive.
